Trying to download a file, but instead, you get hit with this message? “Permission denied. Please check your firewall Settings.” Ugh. It’s a super common problem with Internet Download Manager (IDM), and it can be really frustrating.
But don’t worry, there’s a simple fix. I ran into this exact error a while back and figured out how to solve it in just a few clicks. I promise it’s not as complicated as it sounds.
In this quick guide, I’ll show you exactly how to tell your Windows Firewall that IDM is a friend. We’ll add it to the “allowed” list so you can get back to downloading.
How to Fix the IDM Firewall Permission Error
Ready to get this fixed? Let’s do it. Just follow these steps.
- First, press the Windows key and the S key at the same time. This opens up your search bar.
- Start typing “allow an app through Windows Firewall”. You’ll see it pop up in the results. Click on it.
- Look for a button that says “Change settings” and give it a click. You might need to be an admin on your PC for this part.
- Now you’ll see a list of programs. Scroll down until you find “Internet Download Manager.”
- Don’t see it? No problem. Just click the “Allow another app…” button near the bottom.
- Next, click “Browse…”. You’ll need to find where IDM is installed. It’s usually in
C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Download Manager
. - Inside that folder, find the file named IDMan.exe. Click it, then click “Open.”
- Almost there. Click the “Add” button to add it to your firewall list.
- Now you should see “Internet Download Manager” in the list. Make sure you check both boxes next to it: Private and Public.
- Finally, click “OK” to save everything. You can close the window now.
And that’s all there is to it! See? Pretty simple. Your IDM should now work without that annoying firewall error. Happy downloading!
Just a quick tip. It’s a good idea to only allow apps you know and trust through your firewall. It’s a small step that helps keep your computer safe.
